This song was initiated by our Fabulous Italian Drummer, Giacomo Caleffi. Here's what he said:
The inspiration came to me while studying a song by the awesome band Mammal Hands which featured a polyrhythmic pattern played on piano. I learnt that and then found myself noodling around with that concept and applying it to other chords.
I liked the idea of the chords changing while the two high notes on the piano remained static, taking on a different colour with each new harmony. I feel this song as a series of ocean waves following one another and I love the fact that it made Julie think of clock strikes because I guess in a way waves and time are doing the same, always travelling in the same direction and taking our lives on a constant journey up and down.
Coincidentally, Julie wrote the references to water in the chorus without being aware of Giac's thinking! How in sync was that!?
